It is certainly the oldest in South Africa and the first known commercial flight happened from the old Baragwanath aerodrome in 1919. Formed at the old Baragwanath site, where it thrived for years, the Club moved further away from the growing city forty years ago in 1983 when it was relocated to Syferfontein.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The move was traumatic, but with the old hangars taken down and moved and a new clubhouse built, and a new tarred runway, a new era began. The traditions of the old Baragwanath were transplanted to the new home where the famous JLPC air shows continued. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"415\" src=\"https:\/\/jlpc.co.za\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Picture6.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-978\" style=\"width:790px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jlpc.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Picture6.jpg 624w, https:\/\/jlpc.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Picture6-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jlpc.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Picture6-349x232.jpg 349w, https:\/\/jlpc.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Picture6-229x152.jpg 229w, https:\/\/jlpc.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Picture6-480x319.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As it stands today the Clubhouse commands remarkable views towards the Johannesburg skyline over rolling lawns. The evenings are particularly beautiful with the lights on the horizon and the starscape above, making it a pleasant place to spend the whole weekend (members being entitled to a free night&#8217;s accommodation a month and visitors are welcome). The club environment is welcoming and supportive of all South African amateur aviators, with a view to keeping the cost of aviation as low as possible, so it can be accessible. There are no landing fees or service fees, fuel is available.
